Micro Precision Z series have won over critics and accolades for its sound quality. Unique in design and there can only be one series Z transducer – the special membrane (speaker cone) - fully handmade by Mr Gorlick who now works in Micro Precision - have achieved cult status among the high end fraternity. The question now is – how can the Z series be improved upon? Thomas Hoffmann from Micro Precision has this to share with us.
“The basket, magnet and surround are parts that allow the membrane the possibility to move. The standard Z series uses a cast magnesium basket which is acceptable by High End industry standard but there are compromises. Perfect geometry, stiffness, resonance resistance and venting is not possible, so MP has to fabricate his own basket. The speaker surrounds is a new rubber compound molding, extremely thin and light, it affords the excursion of a good foam surround but with the durability of rubber. The ferrite magnets used in the 7 series are replaced with more powerful neodymium magnets. The result is both audible and measurable – perfect flat response from 100 Hz – 4.5 kHz (for the Z-Studio 170). Between the Z series and Z-Studio series, the only common component is the membrane!”
"The changes also extend to the tweeters – the Z-Studio tweeter is housed in a new enclosure which is more precisely made – with a 44 part contruction versus the standard Z series which has only 14 parts. The tolerance of the construction of the Z-Studio tweeter is like a precision Swiss watch – 1/1000th of a mm!"
“The Z series gives the best possible results using regular production technology but only the Z-Studio enables the full potential of the Z series technology to be had. It is a time consuming and expensive manufacturing process but the end result speaks for itself - the finest transducers ever built!”
